in Sudan

At Meroe, you can walk up to 2700 years-old pyramids, touch them, go inside, and be amazed by incredibly intricate and beautiful hieroglyphs. Our production coordinator in Sudan also recommends the country’s many agricultural landscapes that are out of this world. Or you can also report the latest news about unrest in the region. Hence our journalist fixer can make sure you are safe and point you in the direction of interesting interviews.

Khartoum

Our production coordinator in Sudan will tell you that the city is made up of three distinct areas – Khartoum, Khartoum North or Bahri, and Omdurman. The older part of Khartoum lies beside the White Nile while the newer parts. Some of these parts are Al-Amarat and Khartoum Two, spread out to the south. Omdurman has a more Middle Eastern atmosphere. Let our location scout take you through the maze-like streets and the huge Souq Omdurman. Bahri is largely industrial and residential.

The Pyramids of Meroe

Our production coordinator in Sudan recommends capturing the pyramids at sunset or sunrise. They are well-equipped to help you understand the history and imagery. You can walk a trail that leads to various tombs of Kings and Queens of Kush. These are set against a breathtaking setting of the desert valley and rolling dunes. The pyramids were the burial site for royalty. Some of the chapels have partial to full carvings and drawings representing life, death, and entering the afterlife via the Nile.

Jebel Barkal

The jebel is a mesa or large rock outcrop located 400 km north of Khartoum, on the Nile River. It is 104 m tall, has a flat top, and came to have religious significance for both ancient Kush and ancient Egyptian occupiers. Our journalist fixer can arrange an interview with a specialist who can tell you all about its history. In 2003, UNESCO named it the center of a World Heritage Site. The Jebel Barkal area houses the Jebel Barkal Museum.

Gezira

Begun by the British in 1925, the Jazīrah scheme distributes the waters of the Blue Nile through a 2,700-mile (4,300-km) network of canals and ditches to irrigate fields. It makes for amazing aerial shoots. Most of the population engages in agriculture. Crops include cotton, cereals, oilseeds, peanuts (groundnuts), wheat, sesame, durra (sorghum), dukhn (millet), and vegetables. Our location scout has discovered a hydroelectric plant at Wad Madani. Industries produce ginned cotton, sesame and peanut oils, cigarettes, leather goods, soap, and processed foods.

 Blue Nile

The region is host to around forty different ethnic groups. Its economic activity is based on agriculture, livestock, and mineral exploitation. Ad Damazin is the capital of the state, where our location scouting can show you around the Roseires Dam and power generation plant. In September 2011, fighting between Government forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) spread into the state from South Kordofan. Our production coordinator in Sudan can help you shoot a current affairs piece about tribal violence ensuing.

The Meroe pyramids stood the test of time until the 1880s, when Italian explorer Giussepe Ferlini destroyed the tops of many of the structures in search of treasure. As per our production coordinator in Sudan, there are usually very few people, if at all, at this World Heritage Site. Therefore this makes the location particularly attractive to double as ancient Egypt.

The conflict in Tigray, issues around the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, and militarization in Ethiopia’s Benishangul-Gumuz Region led to the closure of the borders between Blue Nile and Ethiopia. This has affected cross-border trade, the exchange of supplies and farming activities, and increased vulnerabilities of people living near the borders on both sides. Let us keep you safe while you show the world how displacement and food insecurity affect people here.
